A person that has whiter teeth looks better. Making your teeth white can make you popular and a little bit of appealing.  Brushing your teeth every meal and consulting your dentist for a monthly check up just to make those teeth whiter.  Using your teeth whitening products everyday and trying to stay away from any kind of staining just like what your dentist told you. But do you know that every teeth whitening process comes with different side effects.

Any whitening bleach or any kind of whitening product does the same thing to your teeth. It washes stains and makes your teeth whiter by scrubbing and braising the outer cover of your teeth and destroys some of its old part, the stained part of your teeth usually the yellow one, to make your teeth whiter than the outside. Even natural whitening products commonly used contains harmful material that may destroy the teeth. Whiter teeth are a lot more sensitive than those common teeth. The patient may feel short sudden pains and stings while consuming hotter or colder food and drinks. The tooth enamel of your teeth that protects you from such sensitivity is decreased and thus making your teeth fragile and most likely to decay faster compared to untreated teeth. Different studies are conducted and same results are obtained. Whiten teeth that went through bleaching process contain microscopic holes and expose your teeth to microscopic particles

It can be avoided since most of bleaching products will harm your teeth in exchange for a whiter color. Before any kind of treatment or procedure, the dentist should warn the clients that pain is usually associated to this kind of procedure. But if the pain felt is too great, it’s an indication that you the procedure is too harmful and the dentist may stop and discontinue the process. Usually dentists don’t use anesthetics to numb the pain felt during the procedure since it will make the process a lot safer. It is best that you are notified of such side effects before engaging to any kind of procedure.

With launching of different teeth bleaching products, a few studies were also conducted to find out if there are any side effects of teeth whitening. Studies suggest that teeth whitening are by and large safe and very effective.

The most common side effect of teeth whitening is sensitivity. In some cases you feel irritation of gums as well. Often these side effects are because of poorly fitting mouth trays and whitening gel spilling over to the gums. These effects can be minimized by taking following steps.

  • If you feel you teeth highly sensitive during the first time use, it is advisable to stop the use of whitening kit for a few days. It can be resumed once the sensitivity is gone.
  • Too cold or too hot eatables should be avoided as much as possible. Sensitivity aggravates a lot if we do not take precaution while eating food.
  • There are various toothpastes which come with label “for sensitive teeth” should be used until your teeth start feeling normal.
  • Fluoride can be applied to teeth to replenish the damaged enamel coating which is possible if the peroxide filled mouth trays are worn for longer than recommended period.
  • You might also feel irritation in gums which can be easily treated by some common over the counter dental products.

As mentioned above there are no significant side effects of teeth whitening, but it must be noticed that in certain medical conditions, teeth whitening may not be effective. For example if there are cavities in your teeth or the stains are tetracycline stains, no teeth whitening will affect you. Moreover pregnant and lactating women should avoid going for teeth whitening.

One teeth whitening product may produce different results for different people , therefore you should not be disappointed if your teeth does not turn as white as your friend’s who used the same product. In such case just wait until a few whitening sessions are over.

Normally all the cosmetic procedures have some side effects. Teeth whitening is also not an exception though it is not a cosmetic procedure. Teeth whitening side effects are very few but are definitely worth noticing. Most common side effects are irritation or inflammation in gums and teeth sensitivity. Hydrogen peroxide is the whitening ingredient of the gel that causes irritation most of the time.

Some other side effects which are reported quite often

  • · Thermal sensitivity or sensitive teeth as we know it in layman’s language is one of the most common side effects of teeth whitening. In order to avoid or minimize teeth sensitivity one should avoid too hot or too cold eatables for a few hours after the bleaching session
  • If Hydrogen peroxide remains in contact with gums or teeth for prolonged period it may cause irritation or inflammation. It happens when people do not remove the mouth tray even after the recommended period. The false assumption that the longer it remains there, faster will be the effect is absolutely wrong. You can repeat the procedure after a few days but should not let the whitening gel remain in contact with your teeth beyond recommendation.
  • In some case if the person already has sensitive teeth, whitening may result in toothache. If it happens, one should seek expert advice.
  • As soon as the gel is applied our teeth starts getting desiccated and its symptoms are noticeable in the lighter shade of teeth. Once the bleaching process is over, teeth become normal within few days.
  • People with weak digestion, report nausea which is a result of swallowing hydrogen peroxide. You should take extra care in ensuring that the teeth whitening gel is not swallowed by mistake.

Whitening procedure is a dental treatment but is often considered to be a cosmetic procedure by a majority of people. This is the reason people tend to take the instructions lightly which results in mild to severe side effects. Any side effect that you notice should be immediately reported to avoid any permanent damage to teeth.

Can there be any harm from teeth whitening

teeth whiteningDespite being very popular and effective, side effects of teeth whitening cannot be overlooked. As the craze of teeth whitening is catching on, more and more brands of teeth whitening kit are hitting the market every day. With every brand we get a different formulation of whitening gel. Though the basic ingredients of all the whitening agent remains the same their combination with other chemicals change.
This difference in the composition of the final whitening agent causes may cause various side effects. If extra care is taken while using teeth whitening kits, most of the side effects can be avoided.

Following are the major side effects of teeth whitening.

  • Sensitive teeth are the most noticeable side effect of almost every kind of teeth whitening. It gets all the more aggravated if whitening gel is used carelessly or left onto the teeth longer than the recommended period of time. This sensitive effect remains for a few days. As it happens in every whitening session, too cold or too hot foods should be avoided so that no permanent damage is caused while ensuring a perfect and sparkling set of teeth.
  • Sometimes, if the whitening gel comes in contact with the gums of prolonged duration, it causes inflammation and irritation. Care should be taken that the whitening agent does not come in contact with the gums. This can be guaranteed if we go for professional teeth whitening.
  • Home teeth whitening kits are easy to use, but at the same time allow a lot of scope for improper usage. Often people tend to let the whitening gel remain on the teeth under the impressions that it may hasten the whitening process. They end up damaging the enamel coating of teeth. Natural enamel coating once damaged cannot be regained therefore it is highly recommended to follow the instructions carefully before using the home teeth whitening kits.

The last but not the least, if teeth whitening side effects are severe one should not hesitate to take professional help.
